Port Huron to Mackinaw Island Race
Plein Art Festival
Imagine yourself in a picturesque open space, painting or drawing side by side with other painters. A brick lighthouse near a colonial fort and historic homestead, a towering suspension bridge, waves lapping the shore, ferry and sail boats in the marina, shoppers in the courtyard. The colors and charms of the quaint village of Mackinaw City. Pack you paints and consider joining us for our first ever Plein Air event. Saturday July 14th, the Mackinaw City area arts council will be hosting artists from around the state. The categories for this event will include paintings, drawings and mixed media. This is a great chance for you to promote your work and take a day outside in the straits to complete your art. We hope you will consider joining us.
Plein Air is scheduled for Saturday 10-3pm with check in from 7:00-10:00am at the Mackinaw City Women’s Club at 310 East Jamet St.
At 3pm artists will be asked to bring their paintings to the Womens club where a panel of judges with review one piece from each participating artist and then select a winner from each category. Judging will start at 3:30pm with a reception to follow at the Women’s club till 6pm. The winning artists will receive packages to include a variety of prizes from retail, restaurant and hotels in the area. Results of the judging will be announced at 5pm.
Artists will have one day to complete a painting. Fort Michilimackinac will be open an hour early before visitors arrive and will grant free access to anyone interested in painting within the Fort. The headlands, Dark sky park, Mcgulpin point, Wilderness State Park, Mackinaw Crossing along with the Mackinaw City downtown area, marina and bridge park are available for artists interpretation. We do ask that you start and complete your work on location. During check in please bring canvases so we can date stamp the back.
We can assist you with moving materials, watch your easels for bathroom breaks and bring your lunch and beverages.
This is a volunteer event replicating the Impressionist era where artists would paint and work together for a day in the park.

Mackinaw Area Arts Council Plein Air Event July 14th, 2012 Participation Event Form
Saturday, July 14th
Anyplace in Mackinaw– preferred sites of Fort Michilimackinac starts at 8:30 a.m if you are interested in setting up an hour before the fort opens to the public. The fort offers 13 original buildings from the 18th century. Life continues much in the way it did in the 1700s. Paint the smoke billowing from the cannon and muskets fired by the British soldiers as colonial women prepare food or tend the garden. Sketch French voyageurs and Native Americans as they demonstrate their way of life.
Artist applications are kindly requested by June 30th, but gladly accepted after that date.
Artist participation is voluntary and the event is a community event and does not offer payment to participate.
Artists should be 15 yeas of ago or older to participate if painting without and adult.
Artists must be set up and ready to work by 11am.
Artists are asked to create a piece that will be juried by 3:30pm.
Juried categories are painting, drawing and mixed media
Winners will be announced at 4:30pm
Artists may select to sell their work at the conclusion of the event.

Waugoshance Trail Marathon
We are excited to introduce this beautiful trail marathon in Northern Lower Michigan! It is the first Great Lakes Endurance event in the Lower Peninsula. The course follows a remarkable section of the North Country Trail that travels from Cross Village to Mackinaw City. Features include grassy bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan, coastal forests, and inland wilderness lakes. The half marathon starts in Wilderness State Park.
