Welcome Minimize

Dog Friendly

We welcome dogs and hope they have a great visit too. Please pick up after your dog so that we can continue to allow dogs in our parks. The waterfront parks of Alexander Henry, Wawatam, and the Village marina have doggie bag dispensers. There are motels and hotels in town that accept dog visitors so check with the Visitors Bureau.

Mackinaw City is a clean, safe village with spectacular vistas and centuries-old history. As soon as you step from your car you can smell the air, fresh with the scent of the waterfront and balsam forest. The streets are kept immaculately clean and decorated with gorgeous flower beds. Our unique peninsular geography allows everyone to watch the sun come up over Lake Huron and set over Lake Michigan. Today, these natural and historic resources combine to make Mackinaw City the most requested tourist destination in the state. A steady stream of events and festivals are offered by the Chamber of Commerce and the Visitors Bureau. Details can be found at their web sites.

Brief Statistics

The Village of Mackinaw City is at the tip of Michigan's lower peninsula and encompasses a mere 3.2 square miles. Mackinaw City is a community with a rich history. In 1714, the French built a fort on the Straits of Mackinac and called it Michilimackinac, or “Land of the Turtle.” In the subsequent 250 years, the area has seen fur trading, lumbering, fishing, railroads, shipping and ferry services flourish. Today we are a unique resort destination hosting over 1.2 million visitors each year with the amenities of a large town in a pristine rural setting. To learn more about aspects of our town we encourage you to try our free Audio Tour below:
